I bought this to give me some flexibility when recording ambient (background) clips. I already have a field recorder and a selection of boom/shotgun mics for main sounds and dialogue, but needed something to round out the capabilities. This is excellent at that job. It is prone to handling noise but if you can put it on a tripod, or, a padded handle (One of those snakey flexible mini tripods with pipe insulation foam taped around it is perfect) as I have done it is brilliant. The adjustable cardioid pattern is very useful because it allows you to cover the whole range from a solo sound source with relatively minimal surrounding sounds, to a whole choir in either mono or stereo when the need arises. One of the best features is the size of the unit. It will fit in a pocket for run and gun situations, but I have found it also fits perfectly in one of the small zip up cases you can get very cheaply for compact cameras. This gives an added bonus of somewhere to store spare SD cards, batteries and even in-ear headphones. It will also act as an interface and/or pre-amp, so you can plug an external mic such as a lavalier into it and run straight into the camera, phone or PC to give a much better quality recording. I bought this to record our ukulele band so that we can play back and discuss the music. It has lots of settings which whilst useful to many I will probably never need. I just set it on auto level and stereo recording and press the record button. The results are truly amazing quality for the price. Must be played back through a good sound system or headphones as the built in speaker is there just to give you confirmation of the recording. It's tiny and has little quality but that's not an issue. It's a bonus that it's got one at all. It's simple enough to transfer the recordings into an audio editing program using a mini USB cable. Note it is a mini cable not a micro. Easy to source and cheap. It also works as a condenser microphone if plugged into an amplifier or a computer using the line out or the USB to connect as an audio interface to a computer. Thoroughly recommended.Read full review

I am using this to record rehearsal for my rock/metal band, it is easy to use and picks everything up and the free software is really helpful for getting the best out of it. Would definitely recommend for very good, on the spot recordings, having managed to record a very loud rehearsal I imagine this can record pretty much anything.... Don't listen to your recordings through the built in speaker, line out or use headphones then you can actually hear how good the recordings are....

Great sound quality, great features, very user-friendly and intuitive interface. I've recorded outside in the wind during marches, rallies, and personal chats, in pubs, at home in a quiet room - and don't have anything bad to say about the recorder.

I purchased so that I could record my band practices to aid playback and self practice. This unit is portable, runs on batteries which makes it easy to use and records on SD cards in wav or mp3 format, so able to email to other band members etc. Is a great value addition to my kit.
